Global CWR Conservation and Policy

There are a wide range of international organisations working to conserve the knowledge and sustainable use of Crop Wild Relatives around the world.

Organisations and policy agreements  such as:

  • Bioversity International,
  • Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO),
  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
  • Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) work in tandem to ensure that issues such as Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), impacts of  climate change and global  nutrition are continually addressed.

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) in harmony with the Convention on Biological Diversity, provides for the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) as the basis for food security.

Among the countries who have ratified the treaty, there is a Multilateral System (MLS) of access and benefit sharing for a list of the most important food and forage crops essential for food security and interdependence.  These species are listed in Annex 1 to the treaty.
